Hyderabad: “In the current business context that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous (VUCA), it is high time the corporate world realised its social responsibility and adopt holistic corporate management by following Harmonic Business Models for a harmonic globalisation of business,” remarked Prof. Subhash Sharma, Director, Indus Business Academy, Bengaluru.

As Chief Guest at the Inaugural of the two-day International Seminar on ‘Global – Local Convergence of Business Models, Economic Policies and Socio-political Scenarios: A Strategic Rethinking’ organised by GITAM Hyderabad Business School (GHBS), under academic cooperation with the faculty of EGADE Business School, Mexico, on 28-29 November 2018.

Prof. Subhash Sharma observed that in this era of ‘fourth industrial revolution’ characterised by the advent of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Automation and Data Analytics, business models are increasingly moving from rationality to creativity and to imagination, due to GAMA (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon) effect. For holistic development, he suggested a new vision that harmonises the four fundamental forces of Market, State, People/Capillary Action, and the self. Propounding the TCP Matrix, Prof. Sharma suggested that with emphasis on attaining the values of ethics, spirituality and good governance, the matrix would provide the foundation for a new corporate model.

Earlier, Prof. Y. Lakshman Kumar, Dean & Director, GITAM HBS, and Co-chair of the Seminar, in his welcome address, remarked that globalization of business is causing fast changes in business models. The Seminar would address the issues related to the interface of global and local business models, their implications to the economy and the socio-political climate of the world. It would deliberate upon how academic research could be carried out in such as climate.

Prof. Rajagopal, Professor, EGADE Business School, Mexico, Adjunct Professor, Boston University, and Co-chair of this International Seminar, gave an overview of the seminar, and illustrated the global local convergence in such phenomena as when a global company tries to match its product to the local need. 

In his presidential address, Prof. N. Siva Prasad, Pro-Vice Chancellor, GITAM Hyderabad Campus, dwelt on the changing face of industry and business across centuries. Though the Darwinian theory of natural selection is tempting for some to apply to the business context, he contested such application. Instead emphasis should be on business ethics. Prof Siva Prasad hoped the deliberations in the Seminar will cover sociological aspects of businesses. Ms. Saraswati Kavula, Film Maker and Developmental and Environmental Activist, Prof. Maitreyi R. Kollegal, Former Director, IIHMR, Delhi, gave alternative perspectives on business models. 

Dr. Divya Kirti Gupta, Coordinator of the Seminar proposed a vote of thanks. Sri D.V.V.S.R. Varma, Resident Director, heads of GITAM Institutions at Hyderabad, faculty and students from GITAM HBS, and researchers from across the country and abroad participated in the programme.

Prof. Subhash Sharma has made distinctive and significant contributions to the development of Indian Management thought through his creative and thought-provoking books, viz. Creation from Shunya (1993), Management in New Age: Western Windows Eastern Doors (1996), Quantum Rope: Science, Mysticism & Management (1999) and Arrows of Time: From the Blackholes to the Nirvana Point (2001). His academic contributions have been acknowledged as ‘creative and original’ with ‘quite a few exciting, non-traditional and revolutionary points of view’.


Prof. Sharma has also made significant contributions to institution building. He was founding faculty of the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA). He has also assisted in conceptualization and development of WISDOM (Women’s Institute for Studies in Development Oriented Management) at Banasthali, Rajasthan. He is founding Director, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore.
He is a founding member, Indus Business Academy, Bangalore and is currently its Director.

Prof. J.B. Shetty has over 40 years of varied experience in industry and 7 years in academics & consultancy. He has held senior positions in Marketing, Retail, Merchandising, Brand Management and Supply Chain Management. He has held positions of Vice President Sales, Retail Head, and Manager Merchandising and Distribution (Retail) with MNC brands such as Bata, Nike and Lotto. He has experience in introducing new brands in Indian markets, such as Nike, Lotto, Tommy Hilfiger shoes, Disney Shoes and Vicks.

He has launched two new brands Verlon and Hawaiana during his tenure in Bata. He has Consulting experience in Footwear, Merchandising and Healthcare segments. He was awarded by Mr Bata for his lead role in introducing automation in the supply system in 1990 & for his sense of urgency in restarting the devastated Mount road flagship store in 1988.

He is a visiting faculty since past 6 years in many of the B schools of Bangalore apart from being associated with Sikkim Manipal Distance Education in their content building activities for online education.

Dr. Nandeesh V. Hiremath is a multi-skilled and techno-management professional with over 24 years of experience in Teaching, Training, Consultancy, Research and Higher Education Administration & Management. Prior to joining IBA, Dr. Nandeesh has held senior academic leadership positions at various institutions in Bangalore. Dr.Nandeesh has attended, presented & published over 50 research papers in many National & International Conferences/Seminars/Symposia and journals. He has undergone a special ‘FDP on Entrepreneurship’ organised by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) and is a trained ‘Entrepreneurship Educator’ from EDII.   • Bangalore is well connected through Air and Railway from all over India.
  • By Train you need to get down at Bengaluru City Railway Station and Yeswantpur Junction and take the service of ola or Uber. It is around 30 KM from Yashwanpuur Railway station (1 hour journey)
  • From Kempegowda International Airport Bengalur to IBA is arround 60 KM, it will take around 2 hour in normal Traffic to reach IBA Bangalore.
